12 Beers of Xmas – Day 1 – Wild Beer, The Blend Winter 2015

Another year nearly done and it’s time to dig through the cellar for 12 special needs to accompany the festive season.

This is the starting lineup; running order still undecided…

Day 1 is from what seems to be a mandatory brewery for my 12 beers selections. Wild Beer co. are always a reliable bet for something interesting, particularly when it’s barrel aged and in a 750ml bottle. I’d honestly forgotten that I had this bottle stashed away, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it.

It poured a nice light ruddy brown, with a moderate creamy head. Plenty of acidity on the nose.

The sourness hits you immediately. It shouldn’t have been unexpected, but for some reason I wasn’t expecting it to be so powerful. This is a good start!

Sour cherries are prominent, with perhaps a little citrus acidity in the background. It’s smooth, and very easy to sink a glass full without being overwhelming like many sours in this style can be.

There is a problem though. It’s my only bottle, and it’s pretty much gone already.

I hope the next 11 days can stand up to this!
