After the deviation from impy stouts last night, I’m back on them again for day 10. This is another bottle from my haul from last Christmas that I decided was one to Dave for a special occasion. I think I’ve picked up a few this time around for next year as well.
I don’t know an awful lot about Hoppin’ Frog, although have seen a few of their bottles about in the past. This one is a ‘Double Imperial Stout’, aged in bourbon barrels.
The pour is really thick, almost like used engine oil. Not much of a head initially, but it slowly formed a reasonable cocoa coloured head to offset the pitch black body.
The aroma is quite alcoholic, with bourbon notes coming through. The taste has a lot of bitter dark chocolate up front, followed by a more mellow ‘hot chocolate’ sweetness. Bourbon, vanilla, slight oakiness, a bit of espresso bitterness comes next.
It’s really difficult to pick a favourite from the bottles so far this year, but I think this has to be up there as it’s a real belted of a beer.
